Roommate Safety Guidelines

Your safety matters. Here are tips for finding a compatible and safe roommate.

What AkiliStay Does

  • AkiliStay is a connection platform — we help students find potential roommates based on preferences like location, budget, and lifestyle.
  • We are not a party to any living arrangement, lease, or financial agreement between matched users.
  • We do not guarantee the compatibility, reliability, or safety of any user on the platform.

How Your Information Is Shared

  • Your contact information (phone, WhatsApp) is only visible to the request owner after you respond.
  • The request owner's contact info is shared with you only after they accept your response.
  • A messaging thread is automatically created when a response is accepted, so you can communicate on-platform.
  • We never share your information with third parties outside of the roommate matching process.

Before You Meet

  • Always meet potential roommates in a public place first — a campus cafeteria, library, or student center.
  • If possible, verify their student ID or university enrollment before committing.
  • Ask questions about their daily routine, study habits, and expectations for shared living.
  • Trust your instincts — if something feels off, it probably is.

Visiting the Property

  • Always visit the property in person before agreeing to move in.
  • Go with a friend or let someone know where you are going.
  • Check the condition of the room, locks, water, electricity, and surroundings.
  • Confirm the landlord or property manager is legitimate before making any payments.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Requests for money upfront before meeting or seeing the property.
  • Pressure to make quick decisions without time to think.
  • Refusal to meet in person or provide verifiable information.
  • Listings that seem too good to be true (very low prices, luxury amenities).
  • Requests to communicate only outside the platform.

Communicate on AkiliStay

  • Use our in-app messaging to keep a record of your conversations.
  • On-platform messages are subject to our content moderation policies.
  • If a conversation turns inappropriate, you can report the user directly.
  • Having a paper trail protects both parties in case of disputes.

Report Inappropriate Behavior

  • Use the Report button (flag icon) on any roommate request to flag it for review.
  • Contact us at support@akilistay.com for urgent safety concerns.
  • We take all reports seriously and will investigate promptly.
  • In case of immediate danger, contact local authorities first.
